Although the concept of water jet cutting has been around for more than 50 years, technological advances within the last few decades have propelled water jets to the forefront of cutting processes used by manufacturers and engineers around the world. By pressurizing water into thousands of pounds per square inch and emitting it at high velocities through a tiny orifice, water jet cutters are able to erode a diverse range of materials. Pure water jets are used in softer, lighter applications such as food, foam, and paper cutting. The addition of an abrasive (commonly garnet) adds force to the water jet stream and enables the unit to be used for cutting granite, metals, tile, and other hard materials with precision.

The same technology behind water jetting is also relatively safe for cutting when compared to processes such as laser and plasma cutting. Water jets do not emit noxious gases or liquids, nor do they create vapors or hazardous materials. The process does not leave heat-affected zones on the surface, which eliminates the need for secondary finishing. In addition, water jet cutting systems are less expensive than laser cutting systems, which can help reduce costs and provide a unique competitive advantage.
