KMT Waterjet Paper Cutting and Slitting
Water jet cutting technology has been used for several decades to perform paper cutting. In fact, this process supersedes the development of the abrasive waterjet used to cut harder materials such as stone, glass, and metals. Unlike abrasive waterjet cutting, however, only pure waterjet is used to cut paper and foods. The clean, very thin waterjet stream (thinner than a strand of human hair) does not cause the material being cut to absorb water, maintaining the integrity of the paper. The technology also does not create heat-affected zones while precisely cutting with speed. Thus, the efficiency of the process makes cutting with water jets an effective solution for paper manufacturers. Find out more about paper cutting and slitting with water jets below.
KMT Waterjet offers pumps, cutting nozzles, and parts that meet the highest industry standards for quality. When you need a clean cut on time, every time, choose KMT Waterjet.
KMT Waterjet Systems is the leading global manufacturer of waterjet cutting systems, Ultra High Pressure pumps and components for water jet systems. KMT’s product offerings include: UHP Pumps, Waterjet cutting nozzles, Focusing Tubes, Pneumatic Cutting Valves, Intensifier and High pressure parts, Abrasive Cutting Systems, Waterjet Spare Parts, High pressure Valves, Fittings and Tubing Products, Diamond Orifices, Sapphire Orifices, Ruby Orifices, and Robotic applications.
In the early 1970’s the first paper cutting water jet system was used for paper manufacturing at Alton Boxboard in Alton, IL. Pure water jets were also used to cut paper-based materials and honeycomb for the aerospace industry. Waterjets usage developed rapidly when abrasive garnet, an abrasive waterjet material, was added to water to cut steel materials.
Waterjet cutting is very versatile and doesn’t discriminate in what is being cut! Paper thin materials, paper tissues, boxes, protective poly coating paper, corrugated
cardboard, foam, paper sheets, food service paper, industrial packing paper, excelsior cushioning, bags, Tyvek, waxed paper, as well as food, and rubber can be cut just as swiftly as thin carpet. Because the diamond orifice is used to maximize cutting life, typically the size of the stream is a width of a human hair at speeds up to 3,000 feet per second. There is no water absorption during the slitting of paper products when water jets are used.

KMT Waterjet Detailed Information
KMT Waterjet System UHP pumps and cutting heads are preferred by more global manufacturers in the metal and stone and tile fabrication industry. The advantage’s are many including the Exclusive Hard Seal End Cap use fewer parts. With fewer parts, you can be assured of longer life of consumable parts which means less downtime and quicker rebuilds.
The biggest advantage in using water for cutting paper products is the ability to have multiple cutting heads perfectly executing a razor sharp cut every time. The pressure of the water, up to 60,000psi, is consistent and does not need “sharpening” or “blade changing” when using mechanical knives. No sharpening or changing of blades means no downtime which improves productivity.
KMT Waterjet offers the most pump options to choose from ranging from 15HP for simple cutting projects to 200HP for multiple cutting heads and from 20,000psi to the Industry first Streamline Pro 90,000psi nozzle cutting using 60hp and 125hp for multiple cutting head capabilities.
